Kalman Filtering was invented by Rudolf E. Kalman in 1960
- It was mostly used originally in radar tracking of space crafts
- Since then it has found many different applications
- Particle tracking in a detector
- Computer vision
- Analysis of financial data
Kalman filtering deals with the analysis of linear dynamic systems
- The track of a space craft (propagating in time)
- A particle track in a detector (propagating in space)
Most of the HEP projects adopted Kalman filtering for tracking and pattern recognition purposes
- ALEPH, ZEUS, DELPHI, NOMAD, CLEO, ATLAS.
- The application of Kalman filtering to tracking is fairly recent (late 1980’s)
We need to establish whether Kalman filtering is the right method to use for E614
- This requires several tests that are currently underway
- energy, angle and magnetic field
- spacing between detector layers
