TWIST SOFTWARE MEETING MINUTES
October 30, 2001
GEANT
=======
Random number generator
It was pointed out that changing the default GEANT random number generator
is not a trivial task and involves a fair amount of work. This is not currently a
high priority specially that most MC runs to be studied in the near future will
not have a large number of events.
Peter will study this problem further and come up with a recommendation.
Analyzing MC files
The current geometry is not compatible between MC and MOFIA. Konstantin
is in the process of modifying the MOFIA geometry files to match GEANT.
MOFIA
======
QOD
o Histogram comparisons are now implemented.
o KUMAC files for displaying groups of related histograms are are ready.
o Two directories will be used online. One will be a production directory, and
the other is a development directory. The development directory QOD
executable will have a different name.
Pattern Recognition
o Jim presented results on tests of the efficiency of the first guess code. His
plots are posted at
http://stoney.phys.ualberta.ca/Ee614/Projects/E614SOFTWARE/00136/index.html
o The next step is to understand why some tracks fail first guess.
MOFIA 2.2
o A new version of MOFIA needs to be tagged. For this Jim needs to commit his
new first guess code and Art needs to fix a bug that results in a zebra dump. Also
the geometry implementation is needed from Konstantin.
November run
o The run will start with straight tracks for about 10 days. The magnet will then be
turned on.
o The map file is ready but needs testing particularly for the downstream half. The
geometry code that Konstantin is working on is required for that test.
COMPUTING ISSUES
=================
Tape drives
o Renee is comparing costs between the old DLT drives and the new (super) DLT
drives.
o The super DLT drives can read tapes written with regular DLT drives.
ABSOFT
o A new absoft compiler is out. However, it was agreed that we will not switch to the
new version of the compiler until at least January to avioid interruptions to the present
run and analyses which may result from compiler bugs or incompatibilities. This is
a major version of the ABSOFT compiler and is not free. Institutions that might need
an ABSOFT compiler in the meantime should buy the old version.
RedHat
o A new version of RedHat (7.2) is out. It was also agreed that no updates will be done
until at least January.
TWIST cluster
o SAM is suffering from bad disk sectors. It will have to be halted soon to investigated
the problem.
Disk Space
o Some files on disk will have to be deleted. Andrei will send out a message inquiring
which runs are needed to remain on disk.
