    TWIST SOFTWARE MEETING MINUTES
                          October 20, 2000

Straight line tracking using the Kalman filter has been tested on
GEANT Monte Carlo events. These events were generated with a vertex
distribution (at the target) of 1 cm in both the U and the V
directions, a flat distribution in phi, and a theta angle of
30 degrees with respect to the beam direction. A total of
100,000 events were generated and analyzed successfully. The current
analysis uses wire positions (no timing) in reconstructing the tracks.
An average of 2.5 iterations were needed for the fit to converge,
at a CPU time of 5 ms/event. When the timing is included, one
would expect 10-20 iterations for straight tracks requiring a CPU
time of 25-50 ms/event (on MITCH or a PII 450). The results of
the fit are posted at

http://stoney.phys.ualberta.ca/~e614//Projects/E614SOFTWARE/00071

CPU time estimates have been made and were discussed at the meeting.
These estimates are posted at

The group discussed the software preparations for the online analysis
of cosmic data to be acquired starting in November. The types of analyses
needed online include:

1. Diagnostic-type histograms such as number of hits on wires to
identify dead channels, hot wires. TDC spectra for each plane/wire,
TDC channel hit multiplicity, etc.

2. Cross talk analyses including histograms of TDC width, and wire/wire
hit correlations, as well as calculations of cross talk rates.

3. Straight line tracking (possibly w/o timing), and histogramming
results such as residuals, reconstructed angles, etc.

4. Efficiency calculations.

Most of the points listed above are already in the code. The efficiency
calculations are still to be added; this will be the next step. Once
the efficiency code is written and installed we will proceed to include
the timing in the tracking.

Andrei will install the GEANT Monte Carlo at U of A and will start
generating Monte Carlo events. The analysis code will also be installed.
The tracking code has not been put into CVS yet, but will be put there
soon.
