		   E614 Software Meeting Minutes
			  May 30, 2000

(1) Kalman filtering tests:

Further tests of the Kalman filter were discussed. These
tests were done on helix generated data with no smearing.
Maher's presentation on these tests is posted at

http://stoney.phys.ualberta.ca/~e614//Projects/E614SOFTWARE/00053/

The conclusions of these tests were:

- KF in 3-D for a helix with alternating UV measurements works well.
- Performance of the KF with a small number of measurements (22)
works well as long as the filtering-smoothing process is iterated.
- No failure modes found that are intrinsic to KF (Cp sensitive).
- The KF is not too sensitive to starting parameters.
- With 22 measurements the KF typically converges after 6-8
iterations down to levels below 10^-3
- KF is very sensitive to starting values for the covariance matrix
  of the predicted residuals (Cp).

The tests on KF will continue.

(2) Software requirements for beams tests for the November run:

The beam group intends to do two separate measurements. The first
is a measurement of the beam properties (x, y, dx, rf, tof, decay
times and pulse heights). The second is a MuSR type experiment to
measure muon polarization. For details on the hardware they
expect to need, and the type of analysis they will need see
Glen Marshall's posting at

http://stoney.phys.ualberta.ca/~e614//Projects/E614SOFTWARE/00055/

This analysis will be completely independent of MOFIA. MIDAS
will be used for data acquisition, and the beams group will
write their own software to analyze these measurements.

(3) Software requirements for chamber alignment for the November run:

Don Koetke presented the alignment issues that he proposed for
discussion with the chamber alignment group. These are posted
at

http://stoney.phys.ualberta.ca/~e614//Projects/E614-S3/00002/

The group has not met yet, but intends to meet soon to discuss
these issues and arrive at conclusions with respect to the kind of
software they need for the November run as well as the long term.

Maxim is looking into making a version of GEANT for the upcoming
November run. Renee also asked Maxim if he could come up with a
GEANT project for our summer student Bruno to work on with the
help of Renee.
