CVS Release 1.2 of E614 GEANT is nearly ready, so all of you with Alpha
machines will soon be able to get set up at your institutions. To let
you know what needs to be done, I have included the list of Monte Carlo
jobs that has been growing on my whiteboard. Jobs currently being worked
on have names listed after them. If you see a topic that interests you
let me know and I can get you started. Feel free to add new topics.

                                                     Best regards,

                                                     Dennis

  1. Study muon depolarization at target

     a. minimize depolarization by tuning beam and solenoidal field

Dennis Wright, Bojan Ramadanovich, Jaap Doornbos

     b. add very low energy behavior of muons to GEANT (muonium formation,
check energy loss tables, Barkas effect, etc.)

        Dennis Wright

     c. test methods of correlating initial muon track to final polarization
using TEC or PCs or DCs

        Bojan Ramadanovich (until April 30)

  2. Study energy calibration methods

      a. use pions stopping in the target and in scintillators upstream and
downstream - look at decay positron

         Pierre Depommier

      b. pi -> e nu in flight as a calibartion tool - backward positrons
map out almost the entire E614 acceptance

      c. positron energy calibration using recurring helices

  3. Positron backscattering from the hole in the magnet yoke

      a. how many Michel positrons scatter from the yoke and return to the
         active detector area ?

      b. how small can the hole be ?

  4. Annihilation

      a. How many Michel positrons are lost due to annihilation ?

      b. How is the detector acceptance affected ?

  5. Delta rays (currently turned off - need to turn them on)

      a. low energy upgrade of GEANT required first (borrowing Leo's code)

          Dennis Wright

      b. how will they effect the Michel spectrum?

      c. how should tracking routines deal with them

      d. what will be the CPU time increase

  6. Enable simultaneous digitization of muon and positron tracks

      Dennis Wright

  7. Detector, field, beam alignment

      a. allow detector to be rotated with respect to magnetic field

          Peter Gumplinger

      b. what effect does field or detector angle have on tracks?

          Roman Tacik

      c. how does beam angle affect acceptance

  8. Realistic data (make it dirty)

      a. add drift wire inefficiency

      b. add crosstalk for muon tracks

      c. realistic drift time determination - currently just the distance of
closest approach divided by the DME drift velocity. Need to take
Garfield cell map, particle trajectory into account (tracks have
         significant curvature within drift cell).

  9. Add history data to data files generated by Monte Carlo

add a "Monte Carlo" bank to YBOS which contains for each event
track information useful for histogramming, debugging of tracking,
         etc.

 10. General low energy upgrade of GEANT using Leo's code as necessary

      Dennis Wright

 11. Effect of 5mm thick G10 target holder which may extend into a radius
      of 4 cm

      a. how does this affect high-angle Michel positrons ?

      b. does it disrupt calibration schemes which require particles to
pass through both halves of the detector?

      c. implement geometry for target wheel with blanks
