TWIST - Alignment Study Group
Minutes: Friday, 19 July 2000
Cosmic ray trigger for November run -
-------------------------------------
Regarding the use of cosmic rays before or during the running period in
November, it was agreed that the system will not be prepared to use a
cosmic ray trigger before the beam run. We expect to set up and use a
cosmic ray trigger after the beam tests are completed and from this
cosmic ray running, we intend to learn more about the use of cosmic ray
for possible alignment and chamber testing at future times.
Beam tracks at large angles for November run -
-----------------------------------------------
Regarding the use of high energy beam tracks at large angles with
respect to the normal to the detector plane surfaces, it was agreed that
this will not be possible as part of, or before the M13 November run;
there will simply not be sufficient time to position the detector in a
location suitable for this measurement, e.g., M11. Whether this happens
after the November run with either part of the detector, or with the
entire detector assembly remains to be determined. Such tracks have been
posited as a useful way to do z-alignment of the detector planes.
Camera alignment in November -
-----------------------------
Evidently, we will not be prepared to take any data using the CCD camera
alignment techniques in November to study motion of the cradle, etc..
(Actually, I don’t know much about this...)
Alignment of the detector with the magnetic field -
----------------------------------------------------
We discussed Bob Tribble’s proposal for aligning the detector with the
magnetic field (c.f., posting of 3 July 2000). The method is moderately
straight forward but depends on characteristics of the entering beam.
The M13 beam diameter (~5 cm) appeared to be sufficient for Bob’s
method. It would be good if we could take some test data to study the
method in the November run.
Goal for November alignment studies -
-------------------------------------
The overall goal for the November alignment studies will be to take
sufficient tracking data to attempt to estimate how well we will be able
to do the alignment of the individual wires. To be prepared for this,
we need to do MC studies with the tracking codes before the November run
if possible. This will allow us to check the codes, implement the
alignment codes and test these, and estimate the number of tracks, and
therefore the running time needed for our tests. The availability of
the tracking codes is crucial in this process.
Next meeting -
------------
The next meeting will be at 1:00 PM PDT (3:00 PM CDT)
