Subject: Initial thoughts on alignment studies

This list of alignment topics was sent to the Alignment Study Group
(ASG)
on 15 May 2000.

The immediate task for the Alignment Study Group (ASG) is

o to identify the alignment goals to be achieved in the November
  engineering run.
o to identify the support needed to achieve these goals, and,
o to articulate what we will need to achieve the goals.

Some elaborations on these --

1. Define the alignment goals for the November run.
   a. Study chamber inter-alignment, i.e., wire spacing/positions.
   b. Study intra-chamber alignment, i.e., between planes.
   c. Study detector alignment w.r.t. the magnetic field.
   d. Study detector alignment w.r.t. the beam.
   e. Study detector alignment properties with cosmic rays.

2. Identify the support needed to achieve these goals.
   a. Access to specific data.
   b. Software to read/process data needed.
   c. Hardware required to make measurements.
   d. Beams needed for alignment studies -
      - Muons/positrons with magnetic field on
      - Muons/positrons with magnetic field off
   e. Monte Carlo codes for detector in November.
   f. Monte Carlo codes for magnetic field on/off with beam.
   g. Monte Carlo codes for cosmic rays; field on/off.
   h. Other

3. Articulate what we need to do to achieve the goals.
   a. Define what data is needed for our measurements.
   b. Specify what analysis codes are needed to be written.
   c. Decide who will agree to own what goals.
   d. Other

I suggested members of the ASG review the lists under #1,2,3 above
and edit them as needed. For example, under #1, we will
need to specify --

-- How we propose to study each item, and,
-- What we expect to learn from each study.

There has been no further conversation on these topics (5/30/00).
