TWIST Technote 100

Muon depolarization in multiple scattering

Pierre Depommier, 7 September 2005

This technote was originally written in the context of other experiments (Searches for a transverse polarization of the muon in the K+ -> pi0 mu+ nu and K+ -> gamma mu+ nu decays at KEK). It may also be useful for TWIST.

The matter was also presented at the 2001 TRIUMF Summer Institute. The essential point is the rotation of the polarization vector in an electric field.

It can be shown that, for low-energy muons, depolarization tue to multiple scattering is small, but is it absolutely negligible in precision experiments like TWIST?
